Blowing up trade talks with the Americans was a foolish and reckless move on the part of Mark Carney. Fifty percent tariffs on over $20 billion in Canadian goods will now be imposed. Perhaps as many as 90,000 Canadian jobs will be lost. The majority of the world’s countries have all been subject to the same process of reset trade negotiations with the Americans, however, only Canada and China took a war footing, everyone else reached mutually beneficial agreements.
Without specifying which countries are of concern, Carney claimed the U.S. was trying to dictate Canada’s international trade policy. In addition, some minutia involving tariff rates covering the auto and other industrial sectors was criticized. Carney also complained about U.S. interference in cultural matters which he feels undermines Canadian sovereignty. And apparently, the U.S. took issue with French language packaging on goods sold in the U.S., and on Canadian censorship bills which prevent things like news from being posted to Facebook. However, none of what has thus far been reported concerning the failed trade talks rises to a level commensurate with essentially abandoning the negotiations. Because of this, the details of the discussions must be made public, since their implosion, at the eleventh hour, makes little logical sense. In fact, the reasons cited by Carney are extraordinarily thin and point to the more likely cause of such a drastic last minute negotiation failure to simply be that Carney and his Liberal cohorts were never intending to enter into an equitable trade agreement, because the Carney government’s popularity hinges on the maintenance of adversarial relations with the Trump administration.
United States trade representative Jamieson Greer told reporters that in the final version of the deal tariffs on steel, aluminum, and auto had been effectively reduced to seven percent — although larger tariffs still applied to some trucks. In a perfect world a zero percent tariff in these key industries would of course be ideal. However, if what Greer says is true, movement in favour of Canada from 50%-25% to 7% does not appear to be all that bad, certainly not something to cause one to walk away from the table.
Another complaint which Carney articulated in his fuzzy stammering kind of way was the sovereignty bit concerning Canada’s trade agreements with other countries. Even Terry Glavin admitted in his most recent newsletter that “the Americans demanding that Canada’s policies be aligned with the United States in the matter of sanctions and trade relations with foreign powers,” was something he was “inclined to the view” as “not an unreasonable standpoint for the Americans to adopt.”
However, Glavin, as per usual, dismisses the role played by Trump Derangement Syndrome in the failed talks. It is remarkable how immediately popular among Canadians was Carney’s choice to end trade negotiations with the U.S. It’s almost as if Carney realized, that due to the extent of state-sponsored propaganda which intensified the irrational feelings Canadians harbour for the American president, manufacturing conditions to justify a war posture and in the process sabotaging trade relations with Canada’s biggest trading partner, was clearly the more politically expedient and popular move. On the other hand, reaching an imperfect but good enough deal with the Americans would not serve, but instead harm, Carney’s political interests and agenda.
Glavin claims that those who “attribute skepticism” of Trump to Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) are not “entitled to be admitted into the company of reasonable grownups.” But concerning the motivations of the Trump administration, Glavin questions if Trump and other senior leaders like Howard Lutnick are just being “jackass(es),” and puts forward no real analysis. He even ends one paragraph with, “I offer no opinion.” The “jackass” remarks are the first sign that a little TDS is bothering Glavin. Perhaps enough so to cause some unwelcome sweating, or the loss of a few hours of sleep. But the bigger sign that TDS is strong with Glavin, is the wholesale lack of any understanding of what the Trump administration is actually doing: smashing the globalist system of political economy (which includes DEI and climate change madness), and replacing it with a system which draws on Hamiltonian principles and is focused on expanding and bolstering American sovereignty and prosperity, and the sovereignty and prosperity of the lucky nations which America chooses to do business with.
So, why did Carney deliberately sabotage trade talks? From an optics perspective, because Trump Derangement Syndrome and “elbows up nationalism” are big in Canada. Being at war against Trump plays to the derangement of the Canadian masses. But most importantly, coming to an agreement with Trump would be seen as a compromise, and that is not what the majority of impractical Canadians want. But from a pragmatic perspective, Carney undermined Canada’s chances at a mutually beneficial trade arrangement with the U.S. because Carney is, first and foremost, a globalist. As a globalist Carney fundamentally opposes the MAGA mission to retool the American economy (and by extension global political economy), into something that incorporates Alexander Hamilton’s principles.
As I’ve written previously in these pages, Trump is a counter-revolutionary whose administration is rapidly and energetically dismantling the so-called globalist post-WWII “rules based order.” It may have started out with lofty intentions, but globalism has emerged in its current iteration as the architect and custodian of both the heritage culture-destroying DEI framework, and the prosperity-destroying model of global climate change policy.
An irrational hatred of president Trump which prevents one from looking at MAGA policies objectively, or from considering the concerns and desires of our negotiating partners, or from contending with the Republican’s counter-revolutionary nature regarding both American culture and political economy, has been mainstreamed in Canada. Because of this, Canadians, who should be joining the MAGA movement to aggressively oppose the DEI and climate agenda of the post-national globalists, and installing their own wealth generating developmentalist system to compliment the Americans, are instead senselessly obstructing and insatiably contradicting this new American momentum which aims to shakeup and reset the entire world and bring us back from the brink of far left globalist excesses.
Canadians who can see past the obnoxiousness and unaffable qualities of Trump must demand the details of the failed trade negotiations be made public. Canadians must be able to see for themselves the deal Carney walked away from.
