Once again I ask readers to turn their attention to American academic Victor Davis Hanson. This time though, it is for his perspective on Carney and his trade war with the United States. So readers don’t assume I am the only Canadian who believes Hanson’s voice is one worth paying attention to, I have reposted the comments of a couple others who seem to agree.
But before we get to VDH, the following will help set the stage. On Saturday, X user @YoungStreete posted the following along with a video clip of American comedian Bill Marr:
Americans are starting to look at Canadians differently. And Canadians may want to pay attention.
For as long as I can remember, Americans always liked their polite neighbours to the north.
That goodwill is being eroded by a Canada increasingly seen as woke, anti- American (not just anti-Trump) and brainwashed by the state run media.
CBC News whitewashing 9/11 (please don’t call it a terrorist attack).
CTV News making 9/11 about “Islamophobia”.
When did remembering the VICTIMS of 9/11 become so controversial in Canada and how did we allow it to happen?
How much further does Canada have to slide into insanity before Canadians finally wake up?
The clip included in @YoungStreete’s post was the following monologue by Bill Maher, where CBC and their internal directive to not use the word “terrorist” when covering the 9-11 anniversary became the butt of a joke. American’s are indeed starting to take notice of their strange and inexplicably hostile northern neighbour.
The following paragraphs were written by BC MLA and leader of OneBC Dallas Brodie, as an introduction to a Daily Signal video posted by Brodie last Monday to Facebook, of Victor Davis Hanson giving his analysis of the situation between Canada and the United States:
For any of you who do not know of Victor David Hanson I strongly recommend that you listen to this interview. Obviously I am not a federal politician and my voice is only one in 93 in the B.C. legislature - but I want to weigh in on what I see as a very dangerous course our Prime Minister Mark Carney has set us on.
We are a tiny country in terms of population and the majority of our cities are clustered along our border with the United States. We have almost no military power. We have become more and more effete since our brave performance in WWII. Our economy is on life support with GDP crashing, prices rising, taxes suffocating and our best citizens now leaving at the rate of 10,000 per month.
We have the great fortune to share a border with the most powerful country and the largest economy in the world and what do we do? We throw rocks and snear at the leader of that country.
To what end? To have a momentary puff of the chest? To feel good at a dinner party? To have a sense that somehow we are better than the Americans?
Very unwise.
Further the amount of capital leaving this country for the US is growing. There is no alarm or ticker tape that tells us each time another chunk of capital leaves Canada. There is no announcement. It just leaves. Quietly gone and with it jobs and our tax base.
And as the above tweet says OUR OWN PRIME MINISTER is betting against Canada by keeping 91% of his money in the US!!! What brazen hypocrisy!
Never listen to what people say - only watch their actions. Watch where they put their money and then you know their true beliefs.
For some strange reason, my detractors of which there are many, have criticized my wealth - implying somehow that this is something that goes in the demerits column of my story. For some online trolls my wealth has become an obsession. Some have even commented that I am only in office to protect my own wealth! Imagine! A person who owns property fighting to protect private property rights! How outrageous!!
But think about this: I have nothing off shore, I have nothing in the United States and all I own is right here in Vancouver. I am all in for this province and fighting for us and while the legacy media glosses over the blatant contradiction in Mark Carney’s 91% US investments they alternately attack me and ignore me with a vengeance.
We have become a sorry excuse for a country - in the event of an invasion we would be sitting ducks with our only hope for rescue coming from - yes you guessed it - the United States of America.
How deluded we have become. We cannot replace the US market - for heaven’s sake! The rest of the world yearns to have access to the US market and we sit here like spoiled brats! Incredible!
My message to Mark Carney (which he would no doubt snub in that snobby way he has) is this: return all your money to Canada before you undermine our relationship with America. You’ve safe guarded your self and your family but you want to gamble with ours. This is pathetic leadership. Please go back to England and let a true Canadian run this country.
It would be wise if Canadians took notice of the new attitude towards us that is beginning to take hold in certain American quarters. It really would be helpful if we could just put down our elbows and stop playing the victim for a minute. The Trump administration may be off base on an economic item here or there, but we are acting like they are outrageously unreasonable, like they attacked us with devastation out of nowhere with no warning, like Donald Trump has the world’s most incurably severe and contagious case of the cooties.
And worse, we are refusing to see any sense or point to why the Americans might be changing their economic policy. We are hung up on Trump’s rudeness. We will continue to hurt ourselves until we get over that. Expanding trade between Canada’s provinces, and with jurisdictions outside of North America are both great things. However, what Carney is doing with China, and now, with the EU, will only provoke and antagonize the Americans more than they already have been, while providing nothing close to what we are losing by alienating ourselves from them.
On Wednesday, National Post columnist Barbara Kay posted the following to X along with a righteous opinion piece written by Victor Davis Hanson about Carney:
Oof! @VDHanson gives @markjcarney a smackdown for the ages: The Fantasy House of Mark Carney.
In that piece, VDH begins with:
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney now believes he is more than just the Western foil to Donald Trump and his MAGA movement—he is the global one. (bolding mine).
VDH understands the implications of Carney’s embrace of Beijing better than most Canadians. On this, he had the following to say:
Canada and the United States both agree that China dumps cheap steel and aluminum into Canada, allowing Canadian manufacturers to use that cost advantage to export assembled vehicles to the vast U.S. market at prices below those of American vehicles. In that way, Canada’s new partnership with China circumvents America’s tariffs on Beijing. China will also send nearly 50,000 electric cars and trucks into Canada under a meager tariff, ensuring that the Canadian EV market is increasingly dominated by Chinese vehicles.
But Carney’s ploy goes beyond helping the communist Chinese dictatorship gain trade leverage over his own NATO neighbor. He has eagerly concluded a comprehensive Chinese-Canadian pact involving travel, visas, food safety, energy, and public security. Carney has grandly described these new agreements with Beijing as part of a new paradigm in which “middle powers” like Canada play China against the United States (Canada’s annual nominal GDP is roughly the size of New York State’s).
How ironic that Carney attacks his neighbor, the United States, for trade unfairness while warming to the communist dictatorship in China. Communist China, after all, is history’s greatest violator of trade protocols—guilty of manipulating its currency, dumping products to secure market share, violating copyright and patent laws, and imprisoning a million Uyghurs.
VDH thinks of Canada as a socialist country with failed policies, that relies on the U.S. to mask its failures. At the very least, a successful nation builds the capacity to defend its borders. It does not, depend parasitically on its larger neighbour to do all the dirty work and heavy lifting. A nation interested in success does not go out of its way, as Carney has ensured we have, to undermine the vision of the current American administration. And a serious nation whose success is so dependent on the U.S., as Canada’s is, would not lash out in so hostile a fashion becuase they don’t like the mean words of the American president or the terms of a trade deal.
We are not serious about Canadian success, at least Carney and his Liberal supporters are not. Carney’s eye is on the success of the globalist system; his voters just want to stick it to Trump. But Carney wants to lead the “Middle Powers” and further inflate his enormous post-national ego. So if over 80% of Canadians want to support him, flap their elbows, and go through life as the pawns of the globalists helping destroy sovereign democratic Western nations in the late modern period, than what is the small minority of detractors to do?
At some point, unless Carney’s hubris is dampened and his globalist ambitions checked, things might really begin to crumble. Things are bad now, but they could of course be far worse. If or when they become so, we, the enlightened ones who never exercised our elbows in any sort of public display of boney cringe — never even considered it actually — will be ready to pounce with our rational analysis and perhaps set old information onto newly opened ears. As Canadians continue to suffer the consequences of failed Liberal policies, more will cross that Rubicon and forever depart the shores of Leftism. We must welcome them to the shores of the real, where the rational dwell and the brave protect all from the evil spirits as they emerge from the darkness.
Solving Canada’s complex problems will most likely be a thankless frustrating process that will take years, where the nation never really resolves into the ideal it aught to be, where there are just a few less heartbreaking steps backwards as there are hard-fought steps forward, where things only appear incrementally better if one crouches down low in a certain corner and squints from a certain angle, but only when the light reflects in a certain gleam. But such is the democratic way, I’m afraid. I wish it weren’t so. For now we must suffer the elbows up idiots. Their crass anti-Americanism and their gross sycophancy to King Carney. I pray for the sake of the nation they see the light soon (before they obliterate everything good about it).

Many of us share your foggy concern for how this ends for Canada. But, how did we go - in a New York minute - from an impending Trudeau electoral disaster to fantastical delirium over Carney? Same party. Same policies. Different suits. It beggars belief.
What good does our vaunted politeness do us when our nation’s leaders are clearly delusional????? I’d rather have a ‘rude’ but realistic leader than a smarmy, arrogant leader trying to lead all Canadians down the loony bin path he is on. He doesn’t care one whit for us Canadians. He only cares about his self and his delusional ego and pride. We all know what proceeds the ‘fall’!!! Only, Carney, the Barker at the local fair called Canada is separating a fool from their money and laughing all the way to his foreign banks. Wake the —— up Canadians!!! Yikes!
