Today we have an interview of historian Scott Miller by Sean Rasmussen the producer of the great podcast View Points. If you enjoyed Scott’s essay from Tuesday, The Socialist Foil that Never Was: Part One, the View Points discussion will provide more rich insights into Scott’s unique analysis of Canadian conservatism and the left-of -liberal identity politics it has thus far failed to contend with. Also, be sure to keep an eye on these pages next week for part 2 of Scott’s essay series re-examining Canadian conservatism in practice.
The discussion today centers on the nature of liberal-democracy in the English speaking world and in Canada specifically. Scott and Sean examine the confrontation between socialism and social conservativism and the reasons why Canadian politicians have emboldened the former and crippled the latter. They discuss the onset of illiberal identity politics in Canadian education which began over fifty years ago and highlight some of the reasons why no one in this country, no conservative politician, has been able to rescue Canadian education.
