Thank you James for laying out these very real dangers of these bills and specifically, Bill C-22. More people need to be made aware of how threatening these bills are.
One of the names to watch for on the RCMP side of this issue is Deputy Commissioner Mark Flynn. His official bio on the RCMP website is (politely) buffed up. Not quite a fabrication but misleading to say the least. Let me explain... and why...
Flynn spent a small amount of time doing frontline policing in Whitehorse before being brought in to Technical Operations in Ottawa as a Constable where he worked on doing lawful interceptions of communication (ie: authorized by search warrants to intercept communications like phone calls, emails, internet traffic). This is where he developed strong opinions about "lawful access" including the very strong desire to force all telecommunications providers to provide a "back door" for law enforcement, including (or perhaps especially) companies whose business model is encrypted communications, like VPN providers.
As part of those duties, he was required to do "work" throughout the country but he remained posted in Ottawa for the rest of his career where he climbed through every rank of the tippy top of the RCMP where he sits at the right hand of the Commissioner. Supposedly the RCMP Executive Development doesn't like to have commissioned ranks spend their career in Ottawa since it tends to cause such officers to lost touch with reality; the Ottawa Bubble Effect is real. Yet Flynn did that.
Although the Liberal gubbermint clearly have disregard for privacy rights of citizens of Canada, having police experts providing technical & legal advice on how to exploit technology is likely part of the reason why they've launched this multi-front attack on privacy.
