Anyone who in 1969 actually watched (live) Pierre Trudeau and a young Jean Chretien discuss better ways to properly, legally, morally integrate (not assimilate) indigenous into Cdn society — and then see the absolute rejection of these proposed very generous ideas by senior indigenous leaders — would comprehend then that this rejection was clearly based on those same leaders losing their powers in any such move to give all indigenous a hand-up to the benefits of modern society without threatening any of their culture. The problem is not the people. It is their hereditary leaders who rule (in some cases regardless of modern guidance) as if they are still dictators.
