When the West breaks your heart
But then Canada manages to rip it from your chest, throw it in the dirt, and trample all over it

As I study the culture wars, I am constantly disturbed by developments in leading Western nations like America and Britain. Concerning the latter, I’m at a total loss as to what to say. To anyone paying attention to the Muslim invasion of the U.K., the stories of cultural incompatibility are horrendous, (the Pakistani rape gangs being among the worst). But tragic outcomes resulting from years of mass immigration from the Islamic world were always entirely predictable, as they are in other Western nations. In the U.K., the apparent suicidality of a sequence of governments, as reflected in their immigration policy and general adherence to the social vision of the social justice left, was always, and remains so, something conducted entirely out in the open, by high-profile political figures.
America of course, has its culture wars challenges as well. But it is a different story: America represents hope for the West. The MAGA movement, as Victor Davis Hanson put it is “counter-revolutionary.” The revolution of course, being the woke movement: a far-left illiberal movement, also known as the social justice left. MAGA is a right-of-center populist movement with classically liberal and nationalist values. It is devastating to witness its dramas and missteps which increase, even if only slightly so, the likelihood of its disintegration. MAGA is bigger than Trump, but if the movement fractures into irreconcilable divisions, it is unclear if a more (or less) liberal version will emerge dominant.
An illiberal slant from either the political right (including populist MAGA) or left is something to be concerned with. At the moment, the highly public spat between Trump and Elon Musk is making this writer really nervous, in spite of popular conservative commentators Megyn Kelly and Ben Shapiro taking the drama as “wildly entertaining.” If the MAGA movement is self-sabotaging, or is being sabotaged by infiltrators engaged in a psyop, it is for James Lindsay, and other social media influencers and eggheads to argue over.
However, more important than the personas of mega-powerful elites are the principles (the classically liberal and nationalistic ones). These principles are the things the counter-revolution needs to articulate, protect and preserve. Because Musk and/or Trump seem to be regressing into childishness, at the most consequential moment in modern history, when the fate of the world hangs on the success or failure of a counter-revolution meant to restore the liberal foundation of the Western world, and repair and reverse the damage done by decades of social justice activism, the moment will remain as existential as ever, as the need for strong principled leadership will remain equally so.
In America, the problems, and the solutions to them, will flow in a perpetual current of struggle. Canadians should very much support the counter-revolutionary side, for the dire implications of the woke revolution achieving its big-picture goals in the West spells totalitarian nightmare. And then, of course, there is Canada…O Canada, what have you become? The anguish a true patriot feels knowing what the identity politics of the social justice left have done, and continues to do to Canada is at times too much to take.
At a period in history when one would have thought Canada to be among the safest and most desired countries for Jewish people to reside or visit, instead, we have become the Western nation that, by all appearances, is a leader in the post-Oct. 7th massacre rise of anti-Semitism exploding around the world. And further, one would have thought that upon the realization that anti-Semitism had become ubiquitous, and that it included the targeting, intimidation, threats, and violence against Jewish-Canadians, that political leaders like Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford, and Toronto’s Mayor Olivia Chow, would have attended the Walk With Israel event (where 56,000 did attend) in Toronto on May 25th to show their support. But alas, not one of the trio were to be found.
There has never been in my memory a more passive-aggressive, cruel, and blatantly political snub by way of non-support than what is happening here, especially in Toronto with Olivia Chow. In light of everything that Jewish-Canadian citizens who reside in cities like Toronto and Montreal have had to endure since the Oct. 7th massacre of Israelis by the Islamic terrorists Hamas, not one of the leaders responsible for the jurisdictions in which the violent and hateful anti-Semitism has erupted, had the decency to show their face or solidarity with Jewish-Canadians — even though Jews in Canada have shockingly and unrelentingly become the victims of hate by the obscene terrorist supporting “Free Palestine” faction of the social justice left.
The Jewish community in Toronto had already been upset with what they perceived to be Chow’s lack of support. Can you blame them? Her failure to attend the memorial ceremony on the anniversary of Oct. 7th was the first major misstep Chow was widely criticized for. And occurring just after her Walk For Israel snub, Mayor Chow’s front and center attendance at Toronto Pride’s flag-raising ceremony on Monday June 2nd, has, in my view, made her lack of interest in Toronto’s rampant anti-Semitism all the more infuriating. According to the social justice delusions of people like Chow, Jews, even when anti-Semitism is at record highs, are not “equity-deserving,” like the LGBTQ are.
The good news is a recent Leger survey found that Less than half of Toronto residents approve of Mayor Olivia Chow's performance, and “almost twice as many strongly disapprove as strongly approve.” With the next municipal election slated for October of 2026, one could be forgiven for cracking a little half-smile and thinking Mayor Chow’s days are numbered.
Canada is resisting the forces of counter-revolutionary correction in more ways than its failure to deal with the rise of anti-Semitism. According to new federal immigration data, we have imported over eight hundred thousand immigrants since the beginning of the year. Please don’t fault me if King Charles’ throne speech pledge to make housing affordable in Canada, does little to assuage my dread for Canada’s future especially when one factors in these outrageous immigration numbers. Where are all these newcomers to live? And when do we start caring about a generation of Canadian born citizens who can’t afford homes?
In other areas, perhaps even more frustrating than Carney’s new government’s immediate failure to curtail immigration, concerns the ongoing saga of the dangerous and experimental practice of gender affirming care for minors. As Mia Hughes reports for the National Post, in spite of the growing body of evidence showing gender affirming care can inflict lasting harm, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has launched a legal challenge against Alberta’s recent ban on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for youth under 16 who identify as transgender.
The counter-revolution must involve halting or slowing down drastically the rate of immigration, it also must recognize that irreversible experimental chemical and surgical sex-reassignment procedures on children are immoral in countless ways, not limited to the fact that children do not possess mature enough minds to fully exercise the freedom of conscience required to make such drastic life-altering decisions. In other words, they are incapable of giving informed consent, rendering the whole exercise an illiberal one. Shockingly, while ignoring the in-exercisability of children’s conscience rights concerning gender affirming care, the CMA has framed their case against the Alberta government around the conscience rights of doctors – as Hugh’s writes, conscience rights are not meant to grant doctors “the right to perform interventions that lack solid evidence or violate medical ethics.” Because of course, what should be at the center of all such matters concerning children’s health is the most important and fundamental guiding principle of all doctors: the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm. The entire world is waking up to the tragic senselessness of gender affirming care, but Canada, undaunted, plows ahead regardless.
I am not sure if I have ever written the words “Canada is broken.” I don’t think I have. Please correct me if I’m wrong. However, it certainly does feel as though Canada is broken, and the reluctance to contend with this is simply an unfair deferment of the fixing to future generations. I am not sure what exactly should be done at this late hour to push things in a direction which will ultimately better serve the needs and desires of our children and grandchildren, but whatever it is, we need to figure it out fast and at some point soon reverse and correct the illiberal policies of the social justice left (like the counter-revolutionary MAGA movement south of the border is attempting to do).
But before we can do this we have to convert more Canadians from dis-interested, dis-engaged, low-information citizens, to empowered citizens with access to objective history (instead of propagandized anti-Western post-colonial ideology), who are armed with knowledge of the Western principles and traditions which developed through imperfect but ultimately socially just processes. A counter-revolution needs a counter-narrative, and in this moment, our counter-narrative needs to involve no other details save for the objective truth. We do indeed have a glorious and triumphant legacy in the West that is well worth preserving and continuing, this needs to be understood broadly if we are to expect the younger generation to take up the mantle and defend Western heritage.
In the short term, please do everything you can to oppose the thoroughly un-Canadian “Free Palestine” movement which cleverly hides its anti-Semitism under complicated middle eastern politics and anti-Zionist rhetoric. You cannot repeat enough, out loud, in public places where others will overhear you: Anti-Zionism = Anti-Semitism. There is no difference. How can you oppose the Jews having a state, but not oppose the Jews themselves? It is not possible. If you are speaking or believing anti-Zionist propaganda, then you have fallen victim to it. You fortunately don’t pay much of a price for your ignorance. Jewish Canadians however, who have thrived in Canada, and participated productively for generations, unfortunately, now feel betrayed, unsafe, and many are considering leaving for good.
And further, please oppose the barbaric medical experiments on children – insanely embraced by the Canadian Medical Association. What many critics, including this one, have called the biggest medical scandal involving children in history, is unusually difficult to oppose in Canada (because, compared to other Western nations, we are unusually woke). However, gender affirming care for minors must be opposed as if the lives of the youth of the nation depended on it. On second thought, the lives of the youth of the nation do depend on us adults opposing it. So let’s do that.
And while we’re at it, let’s walk out on land acknowledgments like Jim McMurtry and Catherine Kronas. Let’s perform innocent (enough) acts of civil disobedience (or support those who do), like Daniel Tate, who helped Free John. Let’s keep reading educator Igor Stravinsky’s regular column in these pages as he continues to chronicle the social justice madness going on inside the Peel District School Board. And let’s follow closely the research of Nina Green and other Indian Residential School researchers like those associated with IRSRG, who examine the history and politics around Indian Residential Schools and Truth and Reconciliation — few things could be more important for Canada than to set the historical record straight concerning colonialism, Indian Residential Schools, and modern indigenous-non-indigenous relations.
Let’s support anti-woke lawyer Jim Heller, as he takes the B.C. Law Society to court, and Professor Frances Widdowson (and her academic freedom mission), as she travels around Canadian universities engaging students and faculty in contentious conversations about the purported 215 murdered children discovered at a former Indian Residential School in Kamloops, B.C. Let’s purchase a copy of The Scarlet Lesson, Jim McMurtry’s new book, and support his fight against an illiberal school board who fired him for imparting historical truths about Indian Residential Schools to students.
There are many other alarming social justice issues worth opposing, and many more dissident and anti-woke figures worth supporting. A future essay is sure to include those people and issues left out of today's comment. Until then, stay tuned.

As noted in the comment above, “mass immigration, antisemitism, and transgender ideology are all symptoms of the evil idolatry of Leftist ‘progressivism.’” In the field of education, the triad of school boards, teacher regulatory bodies, and unions have long been champagne socialists, if not Antifa-lite anarchists and bashers of reason. If one fights back, one is crushed. In my case, something as small as land acknowledgements are treated as sacred cows though most teachers and students are troubled by them. I am of course honoured that a writer as cogent as James Pew remembers me as I slip slowly into oblivion. He states: “Let’s purchase a copy of The Scarlet Lesson, Jim McMurtry’s new book, and support his fight against an illiberal school board who fired him for imparting historical truths about Indian Residential Schools to students.” My book is my last stand. It infuriates my adversaries and may bring more harm to me. It is like the plethora of articles by James on Woke Watch Canada, markers of discontent in an age of conformity to leftist madness and “evil idolatry.”
To paraphrase Ellie Wiesel “ indifference poses the greatest danger”!
Too many Canadians are indifferent to the damage being perpetrated against decent Canadians. A lot of it by our politicians.
