I think Lindsay means, when referring to woke right, those on the right who engage in cancelations and censorings - some of the prime activities of the woke left.
I have enormous respect for Lindsay and Pluckrose and Boghossian - the heroes of Sokal Squared. Nevertheless, I think Lindsay here is making a dangerous mountain out of a molehill. Even with my definition of the woke right above, they are in no way comparable in depth, breadth and intensity to the woke left.
Right wing reactionaries usually don't claim to have liberal values. They're categorically illiberal. They see liberalism as a failed project, no?
Who the fuck knows what any of these terms even mean anymore. It's news to me that conservativism, wholesale, is actually just the correction back towards the liberal 'center'. That's how all self described conservatives see themselves as promoting, sure.
I'd bet the majority of ordinary people don't think about any of the shit talked about in this article. Joe Blow has qualms about the term Woke Right. Yup.
Very interesting. I just posted on Twitter/X that I am against the use of the term "woke right". It just muddies the waters. As to your observations about the eggheads who don't want to deal with the rights and contribution of whites -- as Kaufmann points out, taboo is such a strong force in the anglosphere. And one big taboo is talking about whites (non-critically, that is). I am still trying to figure out how I feel about this identity stuff. I'd rather not go down that route, but identitarianism has been pushed pretty hard by elite circles. And it only makes sense to reaffirm, at least, rights and respect for all peoples including whites. A pushback needs to happen. Can it be done just by reaffirming liberal principles, or does it have to be a more muscular pushback where whites start advocating for themselves?
Great article, very interesting. This is one of the articles that you should be reading out on “your podcast” ! Anyhow, it’s very interesting how the general public will take a commonly used phrase or word and associated with what they believe that it means. In a sense, they give it their own definition it accordance to how they experience it or see it. People do it all the time and unless they take the effort and time required to actually look up a definition then somewhere along the way definitions get twisted. If you hit the streets and ask people what “woke” means, I guarantee you that every person you ask is going to give you a half hearted semi descriptive definition, or they won’t be able to articulate it at all, but rather give you their opinion of it… Like “ it’s ridiculous”. I don’t know why the term woke right is being used, perhaps someone wants to put their everlasting stamp on social rhetoric. I don’t think people pay enough attention or are intelligent enough to distinguish between the academic definition of woke right, and woke left, I think that most people just think that woke in general is extremist and absurd. Therefor, much like caveman ideology when presented with the term woke right, the average person will just think woke bad… So, woke right bad. Lol. Extremism of any kind is not helpful no matter what side it comes from. Anyhow, I’m just another one of those cave men trying to catch dinner and lite a fire in life.
