My wife and I forged many friendships with citizens of the US while living in Mexico there is no way that we consider them as enemies and I would caution everyone not to swallow the Liberal dogma and show hatred towards our friends and allies south of us. Please do not swallow the Liberal hatred they show towards anyone, including Canadians who choose not to be fooled by these self-absorbed hateful comments about anyone who does not believe their repeated lies.
If Canada weren't in such a precarious economic situation thanks to a decade of fiscal (and other) mismanagement, US imposed tariffs would be meaningless. I don't see any whinging about the punishing 200 percent Chinese tariffs on Canadian ag products. Who cares that Trump does. This 'elbows up' pseudo-nationalistic fervour is fucking embarassing and I personally will have no truck with it.
Our 'precarious' situation was started in the 1931 during the Great Depression when SIN and Birth Certificates (securities) were imposed. The corporation masquerading as govenrment was bankrupt and Rothschild loaned all commonwealth countries money to restructure and keep their charades going in exchange for the enslavement of their people by turning Statements of Live Birth into negotiable securities (Birth Certificates) followed by slave numbers (SINs).
The final nail was driven in the 1960s when Lester B Pearson and Pierre Trudeau took us from being in the black all the time, to being a debt economy and always in the red. Once in the red, the imposter national govenrments since have had a perfect exuse to 'borrow' from the Bank of International Settlements, using our properties (land, earnings, children, etc) as collateral.
We own nothing: the only problem now is that WEF's Klaus Schwab insists we be 'happy' about it.
What a breath of fresh air to clear a little bit of this fog of hostility between Canadians and our fellow Americans reading this important and timely reminder that trade issues and disagreements and tariffs are nothing new. Like you, I know some history - yes, Canadian history is really a thing worth studying by Canadians and even hyphenated Canadians (whodathunk?) - which enables me to contextualize current issues with past between the two countries. I have been busy pointing out to many who seem not to share this knowledge that to make a successful east-west political entity separate from a north-south shared geography require a level of Not-American sentiment to overcome the natural flow and pressures of goods and people. But it is a very short and self-defeating jump to equating Not-American with Anti-American and this I have found to be a losing battle across Canada because we no longer have the necessary base of common understanding to differentiate between the two. And this plays out at international events when the boo-birds demonstrate their ignorance. Canada as a nation has significant disagreements with the current US administration's trade policies but we confuse that disagreement with assuming hostility between citizens where none exists. The two citizenries are integrated well beyond trivial differences and we can prove this to ourselves by taking a moment and thinking about the Other: in your mind do you assign to the Other the label of a foreigner? Or, like people I meet on both sides of the border - especially in border cities, do you see Other citizenry like a neighbour? There are reasons for that and more of us need to either come to know or remember if we've forgotten just how important those reasons are, reasons much deeper and longer lasting than a single US administration.
Don't discount that paid activists and unelected NGOs have been set up by the UN to 'boo'. Just as the UN/WHO started the gender and sex-education atrocity, those showing up were paid activists under the control of multiple UN-Soros-controlled NGOs.
They made it appear as though millions of Canadians were for LGBTQ and DEI, when the exactly opposite was true. That's the power of psy ops and media propaganda -- they can convince you the world is one way when it is not. None of these paid activists will explain why they are protesting...because they are just paid to show up and don't care about the issue at all.
Take a look at one business called 'Crowds on Demand' out of California. They have a network of 'activists' and they charge about $600 per activist they hire, keeping about 1/2 for themselves to cover training and organization. They can go anywhere across Canada and the US and do.
The UN has all sorts of NGOs that provide training and organization to paid activists so they are ready to show up when directed. When that issue has died off, they move to other UN invasion projects. Right now, Canadians do not realize the existential threat posed by the elite Aboriginal fraudsters working with the UN to destroy the Indian and Inuit races forever.
Americans feel sorry for us. The paid activists in Canada starting these 'booing' episodoes are few and their antics are reported on as though everyone had joined in. Look closer. Many come across the border when directed by their NGOs and companies for the sole purpose of holding a placard and have absolutely no idea what the protestis about.
Let’s not forget that the Trudeau Liberals won the last election in large part by dividing Canadians over COVID policies, like vaccine mandates. They convinced the majority that a vaccine that did not stop transmission of the virus was essential, and that those who didn’t accept this absurd logic were their enemies. They won. The Carney Liberals are using a similar divide and conquer strategy, but using Trump as the virus
I laugh at the “I Am Canadian” propaganda hyped up to the max here in Canada lately. The thought that we could kick the huge USA to the curb is embarrassingly ridiculous! We need them a crap load more than they need us! What fools to kick sand in their faces, like our genius ‘new’ PM does with his self righteous indignation! Such a ‘leader’!!! Vote for Me!!!! God help us!!! 👎🏻
Like many Americans, I’ve had plenty of Canadian friends over the years and can attest to feeling, as James said, that they are more like cousins than foreigners. Because of the similarities in our cultures and our friendly relationship, I take an interest in what happens in Canada, which is why I have subscribed to this Substack and others, such as Meghan Murphy‘s. I rejoiced when Justin Trudeau resigned and hope that your election brings about positive change and contributes to ending the wokeness that has so infected your country in the same way that it has infected parts of ours.
I’m no fan of Trump and am alarmed at what he is doing to our relationship with many countries, especially Canada. At first I laughed when he talked about making Canada the 51st state, thinking that there was no way he could be serious. The fact that he has repeated this a number of times alarms me. However, even after reading this history of the conflict between our countries, it is hard to imagine actually taking up arms against each other in this day and age. The American public certainly would not support it! It may hearten you to know that I was at a Bruce Cockburn concert a couple of weeks ago in which multiple members of the American audience shouted out that they love Canada and that they’re sorry for what Trump‘s doing. I think everyone there felt the same way.
Many north of the border also understand that Trump has called out Canada for many of its failures to be a serious country and quite rightly so. The hue and cry against the decline of Canada in so many ways by federal policies sees Trump in spite of his many faults as an amplifier of their shared concerns. If Canada is determined to be an unserious country dedicated to creating a failed state and a security risk to the west, then the real world consequences need to be better understood by those who assume these consequences are only local. They're not. They are deadly serious to this fragile and unlikely country.
So the 51st state meme is like telling the unserious and misbehaving teen that there is a limit to tolerating this before privileges are revoked. And there is a very real privilege being so integrated with the US even if many from the Great White North don't recognize this fact. (Travel the world and find out.)
Being reminded of these responsibilities on the northern side of the family relationship is not in itself a bad thing; change and adaptation is coming whether we Canadians realize or not, whether Trump is in the White House or not. What is so very disappointing is that I haven't heard of any political leadership outside of Alberta that grasps our choices now: we can get onboard the direction its heading by changing policies, make ourselves eligible to grab opportunities as they present themselves, or.... we can stand back and whine about not returning to 'normal', blame Trump for pointing out reality and pretend our righteousness will grant us absolution from reality, or stand pat, put our elbows out, and get run over. Knowing the current zeitgeist in Canada, the last choice seems to be the most popular because only that one seems to be accepted as a declaration of nationalism... no matter how destructive to the nation's long term interests it is. East-west cannot survive based on anti north south. The land is too big, too strong, and too diverse to compete against the benefits and privileges from north south trade and security.
For the most part, North America was a happy home, with essential squabbles that healthy members of families often have. Every family has 'regrets' about in-fighting, but still care about one another..
I have spent many happy days in the US, making friends everywhere. There was a time when Americans would gush at being friends with a Canadian. I remember fondly how at horse shows, they would insist on treating us to meals, etc.
This divide is caused by foreigners. Full Stop. This divide is the same one seen between Aboriginals and Canadians and all orchestrated by foreign corporation UN. The divide is the result of false narratives and libel, but they get away with it because we trust mainstream media and politicians.
IF the UN/WEF apparatus keep us focused on hating our friends the Americans, they enter our North American 'home' and take over. Just like any family breakdown where someone is invited in and suddenly has caused formerly strong relationships between siblings, parents and children and between spouses. Only after the breakdown does the family realize they were all duped by false stories about one another by the invitee.
This is exactly what has happened and is still happening. Focussing us on 'hating' Americans has kept us from realizing the WEF has now installed, not only a full cabinet in the previous government, but their man in what has been UN-CANADA Region of the World Government since 1985 -- no election, nothing.
You can look at our recent history and see that every time the UN/WEF need to make another move to take-over the landmass, there is some sort of crisis that suddenly evaporates once they have achieved their objective. COVID was a cover for financial and economic devastation through wealth transfer. Now 'hate Trump' is the cover crisis needed to insert an unelected, globalist communist as our new ruler, and once he is solidly in place, suddenly the Trump 'hatred' will disappear.
Everybody is now all in place for the corporate UN/WEF World Government to finish us off, having quietly invaded while Harper/Poillievre and others kept us focused on trade, Trudeau on a non-existent bug, etc.
My wife and I forged many friendships with citizens of the US while living in Mexico there is no way that we consider them as enemies and I would caution everyone not to swallow the Liberal dogma and show hatred towards our friends and allies south of us. They never won anything. All elections have been rigged for decades at all levels of government.
You cannot call a corporate election anything but manufactured consent, just as you can't possibly seriously call a corporatocracy a democracy.

Well, South Park said, “we are not a real country anyways.”..ha..ha
I'm totally ok with joining the USA.
