Excellent summary. I taught Canadian social studies at the elementary level and students loved to debate and research these issues. The textbooks back then were much more positive and honest about indigenous and European interactions and challenged students to think critically.

This should be considered an essential read for all Canadians, in part to counter the bleak official narrative of past Canadians but also because its methodical and factual presentation of our past, predicated on the importance of understanding the Indian residential school in its time and context. The article is wonderful for me, a teacher struggling for a fair appraisal of history in schools.
