I fully agree with your thesis. The recognition (unconscious or otherwise) that one can partly escape the discrimination and abuse they face as straight/white/male renders the expanding LGBT categories little more than a game strategy. These categories are already stretched far enough that even plain old heterosexuals can embrace a term (e.g. "demisexual"), declare themselves "marginalized and enlightened" and defend themselves from the mob.
