By N. Invictus (an anonymous Canadian teacher)
The creepy, crawling recitation of the land acknowledgments at school created mixed feelings for me. It was 2015, and though the proposal of acknowledging traditional lands may have come from a good place in the heart, I was skeptical about it. Something was off. Why would we voluntarily place anything higher in value than our National Anthem? I did not stand for it, literally!
Nine years later, we are inundated with these religious verses that have taken over every meeting and are recited several times a day. It is sickening to witness everyone passively going with the flow as if their minds have become numb, and their brains have been programmed to go through the motions mindlessly. If there is any active mind among those sedated, they are those who are internalizing the feeling of guilt for occupying someone else’s land! What a shame!
Is there any place in the world that has not belonged to or been occupied by another group in history? If there are any, I suspect they are living a tribal life. Though they may have sustained their original traditions, culture, language, and way of life, they are most likely deprived of the advancements in science, technology, legal systems, and all the benefits that we are fortunate to enjoy. Gratitude for what we have comes to mind! Not guilt.
In response to my communication opposing the reading of the land acknowledgment in a neighbourhood community group, a member of their board of directors said that he/she agrees with me but thinks that this ritual is tied to the funding they are receiving from the government. To this, I pointed out that "I came to this country legally and feel no remorse in occupying anyone's land," followed by suggesting that “if the government is genuinely concerned about the ethics of such occupation, it should stop accepting new immigrants. Additionally, if any elected official is distressed by this issue, they are free to leave Canada.”
When I attended the next community meeting, I was well-received by a few of the board members who approached me and thanked me in confidence, being careful not to be heard by others! The meeting started without any sense of guilt, with homemade cookies, and the joy of being part of a great nation.
A change of administrators brought a whole new approach to our school’s meetings. In addition to the pretentious and practically useless daily acknowledgment of guilt, this prayer is now included in most, if not all, meetings that take place. When speaking with the administrator, I asked him/her to dispense with this ritual. I pointed out that it does not benefit our fellow Canadians on reserves and simply serves as a self-satisfying display of hypothetical virtue. The response I received was that he/she agrees with me; however, will do what the school board expects to be done. I rebutted by stating that an expectation is not a directive. Nevertheless, my request was denied.
Now, in addition to the morning ritual of disgracing our National Anthem, our meetings and professional development sessions begin with the reading of the land acknowledgment. On one occasion, a presenter, whose parents immigrated to Canada to provide their child with the opportunities of the Western world and the benefits of Western civilization, even referred to Canada as Turtle Island. My blood was boiling; I could feel the steam breathing out of my nostrils. “How dare you?” is what I told him/her at the end of the meeting.
So far, I am the only one who remains seated, and we are given the option to stand for the reading of the land acknowledgment. Keyword: "option"! Even the history teachers, who privately admit to the falsehood of the recited claim, go with the flow! We are in deep trouble when our educators voluntarily do things they do not agree with. Many on the right side of things are trying to fight the system, holding it responsible for the devastating state of our nation. They delegate at school board meetings, write, present seminars, organize rallies, etc. Although there is tremendous value in all these efforts and they have made a huge impact in waking up those who had blind trust in our governing bodies, the fact remains that the obedient soldiers of our institutions have a far greater role in the state we are grappling with. All they need to do is not salute!
The enemy is within; the barbarians are among us. The invasion happened many years ago, as we smiled, remained polite, and kept apologizing for things that others may or may not have done. If any acknowledgement is due, I would acknowledge that I am living in the cities that our founding fathers built! And I do not need to do that either; our National Anthem says it all. I will stand for O Canada in a heartbeat.
As some are gradually waking up to the tyranny that has taken over our great nation, the pace of “acknowledging” the disaster that was created is not keeping up with the speed of the destruction of our country and the erosion of principles for which we came here. Simply waking up and staying dormant will not do! The house is on fire, and we are fuelling the flames!
Just don’t Salute!

Excellent article, and I fully agree. I refuse to participate in this sham. It is socio-political manipulation of the highest order. It absolutely makes people feel guilty, and that is its purpose, despite claims that is about supposed 'reconciliation'. Thank you for speaking against it. I find it ironic that the word 'Canada' is of indigenous origin, yet it is now condemned by these socially destructive activists.
If you do something more that 4000 times you develop a neural pathway to make it become second nature, What they are doing here is a form of mind control and indoctrination. One of the many casinos going on reserves (tax free i think) told me they gave away 600 million in the first 6 years of operation. 600 million can buy a lot of things like educational institutions who get addicted to their money.
