The Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations yesterday confirmed it spent millions to uncover the “heartbreaking truth” of unmarked Indian Residential School graves in Kamloops, B.C. No remains have been recovered to date and no accounting of what became of the $7.9 million has been disclosed.

“As a teacher in Ontario in 2024, saying ‘not everything that happened at the IRS was bad’ will get you disciplined.”

In British Columbia, too.

The woke speech police are everywhere in schools. They think it would’ve been better if Indigenous children got no education.

Jim, you’ll of course remember the unfortunate BC teacher who was castigated for asking her students, in a homework assignment, to list both positive and negative effects of residential schools. This was several years ago. At the time, I looked up the online curriculum resource she had (possibly) used and I saved a few notes from it.

It referenced positive remarks made about the IRS by Eva Aariak (premier of Nunavut 2008-13) and Richard Wagamese, and suggested the positive/negative exercise. It also suggested, “Ask students to think about why it might be brave to share a positive story. Do they think this part of the story is important? Why? Why not?”

I’m glad I kept those few notes, because the page at Course Hero has now been removed – though only recently, I suspect. From yesterday’s Winnipeg Free Press:

<< A rural Manitoba school division is apologizing after Grade 9 students were asked to name two positive things about residential schools. An assignment sent home with Steinbach Regional Secondary School students in early April asked them to “make a list of what you think are two positive and two negative effects of residential schools” under a learning activity titled “The Legacy of Residential Schools.” >>

Funny thing is, when I was Googling to see if there was any other coverage of the Steinbach incident (there wasn’t, and I can’t get the full story from the WFP because I’m not a subscriber), Microsoft’s AI program (Copilot) offered, unbidden, two positive and two negative effects of residential schools. "Certainly!" it said, "It's commendable that Steinbach Secondary School is engaging students in discussions about residential schools."

I guess no one has instructed Copilot about the taboo against "positives." (I should mention that Copilot did finish by saying that the topic must be approached with empathy and sensitivity, acknowledging the painful history associated with the schools.)

Hi Joan, if you ever want to email me - jimmcmurtry01@gmail.com - for I find it easier. I deem what you wrote fascinating but I couldn’t find anything by going to the blue hyperlink. Four years ago my Abbotsford colleague was piled on. Not sure that would happen again today. I appreciate you.

Not sure why I even included that now-defunct link in my comment (since, as I learned today, the page has been removed). I edited it out of my comment so no one else bothers to try it : )
