I think the aim is to treat people with respect. There's a lot of words teachers should not use in school, or should not call students. The motherf... word, for example, although the word F....now seems almost hip to use and can be quoted in context without problems. The singling out of the N word gives it a lot of power. You can't even say it even when quoting someone else, without being disciplined or terminated, as CBC reporter Wendy Mesley found out. The three points mentioned in the article are very relevant regarding this issue.
Morals guide the speech of free men. Woke guides your speech to tyranny in ever more restrictive circles. Until you are not allowed to complain about starving to death.
Thanks for writing this. I wished for your sake you could not be anon, but I understand why you need to be.
As a Canadian with a long family history here, and Canadian black ancestry (receipts below) I just get so disgusted at the lies and manipulations of the race grifters that have infiltrated Ontario school boards. The idiots at Peel should hang their heads in shame. My own successful black ancestors would be disgusted by their antics.
This non-stop attempt at suppressing language, and thus thought, needs to be ended.
Have you watched the documentary Uncle Tom? The leftists hate dark skin if you are self made an intelligent, productive individual. They want idiot government welfare cases ( of all races) to stay put and keep the government in place.
I wont disagree. In my case my GG grandfather came to Canada from a slave plantation in Barbados in 1837 and married, had a large family and successful life. And has many descendants all over Eastern and central Canada. It is disgraceful to assume he was ever a victim. The race grifters all over the Ontario school board system are a disgrace.
There were also a lot of skilled labourers who went to Eastern Cabada to build larger brick buildings, both dark and light-skinned. When you talk to people of dark-skinned ancestry, many have no history of slavery on the east coast of Canada. Only the woke kids who attend government schools get that idea because they think there is a paycheck for them in the form of reparations, as well as doors opened for them if they play the game. Sad. The government making people who never owned slaves pay people who were not slaves is woke insanity. You would like my podcast on the hidden history of canada, maybe.
This brave and insightful teacher writes that truth is verboten if it is deemed to “cause harm.” That is why you can’t say “not everything that happened in the Indian Residential Schools was bad”, “no bodies have thus far been found at the Kamloops IRS”, “Asian kids are, as a group, better students than blacks”, or “sex is biological, binary and determined by your body’s reproductive system”.
Saying the above things, or reading a classic with the word nigger in it, is pure treason. Yet those who police our words commit real treason by placing their woke ideology over teaching students about words or truth.
But you can use the word. If you are a black comedian, athlete or rap artist you can use the word freely. On “Trailer Park Boys” there is a white rap artist who thinks he is black. Can he use the word? This is unclear. What about a black rep artist who thinks he is white? Would he have his career ruined by using the word, or would he be encouraged by friends to use the word liberally? Unclear. We alter reality when we let groupthink tell us what we must say. Jordan Peterson taught that to us in 2016, but most of us didn’t listen
Divide and conquer. If someone cannot use a word, no one can use it. Since no one controls the speech of free people, all words can be used. The woke mind virus and political correctness have made life miserable, not better. The point is destruction to bring in communism.
When children can no longer read, write or do arithmetic, please stop pretending they are going to school to learn. They are being groomed by perverts and recruited to be climate change activists.
It is too funny because what they teach is the reverse of what they wish for and the result will be the division of races and outright hate toward each other. My goodness, what a bunch of morons.
I, too, was told when I was very small: "Sticks and stones would break your bones, but names would never hurt you."
I agree with Dr. L. Krauss in his "adult" explanation of that old idiom.
"The bottom line is this: If you are offended by something you read, or your feelings are otherwise hurt, you own the problem. You can choose to deal with it in a variety of ways, either by refusing to read any potentially offensive material, by ignoring the offence, or by writing cogently in response, critiquing the ideas one finds offensive. But it is your problem to deal with. Others are not obliged to cater to your sensibilities in advance, nor need they be censored after the fact. In my day, recognizing this reality was called growing up."

I think the " no broken bones found amongst our school kids on the first day back after summer" statement means that we are teaching our kids a very unrealistic concept of reality. Life hurts, but you grow stronger and wiser when you experience it fully. A toddler with no language skills understands pain after they have felt it. They rapidly develop empathy and understanding with experience—effective communication without words. The circuitry, the neurons in our brains, become hard-wired, so it is never forgotten. Physical or emotional pain is pain, but we heal and we learn.
Bones heal quickly, and so does the heart. Besides, devising a wisecrack when signing your best friend cast is fun when it was they who "dared to jump."
We need logic and common sense to become the norm again.
Interesting article. You seem really committed to the the N-word. So much so that you use it 13 times in this article. While you claim that you don't have a problem "in principle" with the concept of not using racist slurs in the classroom, you remain committed to using the racial slur, despite Black students and staff themselves saying that it causes harm. Clearly you--not Black people themselves--are the arbiter of what causes harm and does not.
You failed to note that other school boards, not just PDSB, have policies about discriminatory slurs-- all slurs, not just the N-word. They, and the Ontario College of Teachers and the Ministry of Education, recognize that the use of racist slurs by a teacher, regardless of context causes harm to the students in their care. Its unfortunate that as a teacher, you don't feel the same. I guess that is why you write under a pseudonym.
No help from the courts. The courts are a pressure release valve to make sure you do not affect the system or the powerful. It is built to exhaust your time, money, and will, so you just give up and leave things alone. I explain deeper with some history of British common-law courts in my podcast here:

The goal of education is to get students to think better, not restrict their speech or the literature they read.

I was penalized for using the word “morons” on a website I used to frequent. Three day suspension.
I avoid sites that will not post truthful comments.
Are you sure that's what "they" wish for, division of races? Seems like it's the opposite is the goal.

Still feeding the rage machine, huh?
Hillary was right.
Typical cultural marxist practice. No!
