Canada is not in the same weight class as the US, economically and militarily. The US is an important partner to the US. But the US would respect Canada more if Canada acted in a more responsible fashion. If the Government of Canada had not tried insanely to destroy Canada's petroleum industry, and had not blocked the sale of its products abroad--no pipelines, no maritime access, "no business case"--the industry would have alternative customers. If the Government of Canada had not chosen to be free-rider on the American military, not even living up to its long-term commitment to NATO, then Canada would at least be a respectable partner. If Canada did not have protectionist policies for some industries, there would be no excuse for tariffs. As well, if Canada had not immediately freaked out at Trump's rhetoric, and got to work negotiating, we would have avoided unnecessary hysteria.
