Last Sunday July 21st, I was editing a piece for Woke Watch Canada when I came across a quote from Justin Trudeau. It seemed familiar to me. It was awful. Could I have forgotten that Trudeau said it? He is quite foul, maybe this particular quote just got lost in the mountain of dumb things Trudeau has said? Or, maybe he didn’t say it at all.
When I first read it, I was disgusted in that way only Trudeau can disgust. The words themselves sounded like something he would say. And the sentiment behind them appear to be something he is actually doing. So I paused from my editing work and decided to post the awful Trudeau quote to X. I posted the following:
“Remember when Justin Trudeau said this? ‘The very concept of a nation founded by European settlers is offensive to me. Old stock White Canadians are an unpleasant relic, and quite frankly replaceable. And we will replace them’."
The post above went viral on X. As of this writing it has 122.1 thousand views, 3.9 thousand likes, and 2.5 thousand re-posts. It also has just under 600 comments. It is some of these comments I find more than a little compelling that has inspired me to write today’s post. It should also be noted, that X has yet to post a community note regarding the veracity of the quote.
Immediately after posting, some people commented that the quote was fake. According to them, Trudeau never said it. I did a quick preliminary Google search and they appeared to be correct. At that point, I was about to remove the post. It sounded like something Trudeau would say, but my initial fact-checking seemed to indicate that he did not say it. But then, I noticed a bunch of commentors claiming that they heard him say it. I asked as many people as I could for verification. Did someone possibly have a recording? When and where did Trudeau say it?
Here are a couple comments from X users:
Press Progress claim the quote is fake. They say it started with a meme posted by MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston Randy Hillier in June of 2021. - “There is no evidence Justin Trudeau ever made the statement attributed to him in this meme.” - Press Progress
Cursory research does appear to reveal the quote to be fake. When people claim to remember it, are they actually remembering hearing and seeing Justin Trudeau say it, or are they remembering a fake meme? I know first hand from my research into Indian Residential Schools that memories are very seldom reliable.
However, I must admit I am compelled by those who claim they heard Trudeau say it. My main reason for writing this post is to ask readers if they heard it, or remember it. So readers, do any of you have any information on this?
One person claimed to have had a recording of the quote on a computer, but the hard drive crashed.
Another claimed it was “an actual quote from Justin Trudeau while speaking in New York in 2016.
Here are several examples of Canadian who are adamant they heard Trudeau disparage “old stock Canadians.”
If the quote is fake, if it originated with a meme posted by Randy Hillier in 2021, why does it keep popping up? And why, if it has been debunked, did X not immediately place a community note on my X post that asks people if they remember when Trudeau said it? I’m at a loss.
At this point, I am leaning towards it being a fake meme. However, I’m not entirely convinced so I plan on continuing to search for evidence. If readers have any information at all please get in touch with me (or just leave a comment on this post).
My final point is that maybe this meme (fake or not) keeps resurfacing becuase every time a Canadian comes into contact with it, it resonates with them, they are reminded of just how terrible Justin Trudeau is. Weather he said the foul quote about replacing old stock Canadians or not, many Canadians feel he believes it, that his “post-national” conception of Canada is in fact an acting out of the awful quote in question.

At 2pm I removed the post from X. It didn't appear like anyone else had commented or come forward with any new information., so I axed it. I fully admit that when I first posted it, I didn't question its veracity at all. After I saw that many commented that it was fake, I was going to remove it, but I left it up to gather a list of witnesses who claimed to have heard JT say it. There was enough of them to warrant me doing so in my opinion. I contacted as many eye witnesses as I could but no one responded with anything definite in terms of when and where it was said.
I want to write a piece that explores false memories, bias, and what Michelle Stirling has called "Ambiguous Losses." Frances Widdowson's piece "Billy Remembers" is another good one that deals with the false memories associated with the 1990s era Satanic Panic and compares it to the Kamloops unmarked graves story.
I understand some of the concerns of readers - that is why I removed the X post. But I stand by my contention that this entire little escapade is interesting for a variety of reasons (I explained some in a different comment on this thread somewhere). Even my own bias and willingness to believe it when I first read it. I'm glad I wrote this piece and I plan on bringing it up again when/if I write about false memories.
Thanks for reading everyone!
It goes viral because it vibes with his famous intention to make Canada "the first post-national state", which he has done by trying to demolish any national pride in Canada. I really doubt the quote is actually true, and from what you say here those who think it is true simply "remember" it, rather than having evidence. I think he is so hated, that the quote probably appeals to most imaginations (the only requirement for going viral).
