I don't think you worded this quite right, James. It's becoming clear (and has been acknowledged by some therapists) that you don't have to have "gender dysphoria" to identify as trans (or non-binary, or whatever). You might do it because it gets you celebrated, gives you an in-group, and maybe exempts you from criticism for basically any kind of narcissistic or anti-social behaviour.
It's often said that there is no fiercer advocate for trans "rights" than the parent (mothers in particular!) of a trans child. I understand that, I really do. But it makes it hard to put much stock in the views of the mother in the G&M opinion piece linked above. Of COURSE she's going to espouse these things, and of course she's not going to even mention potential harms . . .
Only slightly related: I heard an interesting statement the other day, to the effect that: If a child "comes out" as trans at the age of 4, it would be very much like if your cat came out as vegan; it would be pretty clear who was driving the lifestyle change.

Google-able, but I won’t give the link to a specific family because there are kids involved, and they have enough on their plates … These were filmed a few years ago. I only watched one segment, wherein a 5-year-old boy tells us his name and then says,
“I don’t WANT more gender! . . . But I use he/him pronouns . . . I don’t want OTHER people to have more gender, that’s what I mean.”
The poor kid is so immersed in this, it’s apparent he’s just sick of it. His mother identifies as a trans man, his father as queer, and his older brother (who was just ten at the time of filming) as non-binary. Mother “j” recently took up a position as an assistant prof in the faculty of queer studies in education at a Canadian university, and father Bear is a queer consultant and videographer.
You know, I don’t think these parents' intentions are “evil” (and I don't think Anthony's are, either). They're misguided, for sure, but parents with evil intentions have got to be exceedingly rare. I'm not even sure I'd call them bad parents. They're over a barrel, is what I see. (There ARE bad parents out there, of course; an example might be Jazz Jennings' mother.)

I have an acquaintance whose 20 year old incredibly bright and diagnosed with several mental health disorders daughter was coopted by a psychologist, as the story goes, and now "remembers" abuse by her mother, amongst other things. This psychologist counselled this girl that everything would be fixed and better for her if she were a man. She's now a 22 year old double mastectomy patient taking massive amounts of hormones (the long term effects of which are not really known), is clearly not either a man, nor now, a woman, will never be a man and never know what it's like to be an adult woman. Even though this sex change was undergone without the approval of her mother, mom is now fully in the throes of being a trans ally and plans on attending the parent march in protest of "trans hate". She clearly falls into the description of being a fierce advocate for trans "rights" and I would assume she's doing this in order to curry favour with her daughter/son and be seen as supportive. It's completely sad. She won't listen to any other perspective.
An Alberta teen named Crow, now 18 and finally on testosterone, relates how the first doctor he/she sought affirming care from in Edmonton at 16 declined to help him/her, and asked really weird, intrusive questions like,
“What if I wanted to get pregnant someday? What if I had a husband someday? I think he asked me, like, what if you want to keep your boobs? Like it was so weird and invasive! We just wanted a referral to a gender clinic. Just a referral was all that we wanted, and then it would be out of his hands. He refused to do that for us" [us being Crow and his mom, who was supportive].
My thoughts on watching this were, like, thank God there are still docs out there who will ask teen girls weird and invasive questions!!
I recently read Abigail Shrier's Irreversible Damage, and one of the stunners in there was her interview with a plastic surgeon in Toronto who has done "way over a thousand" mastectomies, some on patients as young as 16. No referral required!

The BC Children's Hospital proudly posts on its website that it's the largest gender affirmation centre in North America. WTF. CHILDREN. Young adults. That is utterly criminal. Criminal activity at the taxpayers' expense.
This is truly bizarre. How is it possible that a country like Canada, universally recognized as a force for good, slip so far down the rabbit hole ? According to federal guidelines, sex education, mandated in most Canadian schools, is supposed to teach youth about healthy sexual expression and relationships.
