I really wanted to schedule this to have been the six-hundredth article posted to Woke Watch Canada. However, things didn't work out like that. I partially blame Father David Todor for submitting such an important piece earlier this week on the sex/gender transitions of kids in Canadian schools, which made me drop everything so I could post it right away. And of course, Igor Stravinsky did the same concerning his piece on thought control at the Peel District School Board.
It is a real milestone to have racked up such a big number. Today’s article is the six hundredth and third. Happy 603 Day everyone! Thank you all for being readers and supporters. And, in the spirit of being three posts late on the 600th post anniversary, I am also a week and a bit late extending officially a warm happy new year to all!
Alright. Let’s not waste any time, and get right into it. I am going to make sure that 2025 is nothing short of an explosion of research and writing that continues and expands on the important work Woke Watch Canada has been engaged in. If you see the value in Woke Watch Canada, and feel it performs a worthwhile service, then please do hear me out as I do that thing I do, which I do three of four times a year, where I politely request that readers upgrade their subscriptions to the paid tier, or make one-time or recurring donations to the donor box.

Why invest in Woke Watch Canada? First, let me foolishly give you a reason why not to: The articles and essays are free! Becoming a paid subscriber or making a donation has thus far been an act of pure charity. Many people believe in the work we do, and so feel compelled to help us do it. If they did not, I could not keep this newsletter going. It is too much work, it takes up way too much time. But because of financial support, I am honoured with the privilege of spending an abundance of time running this newsletter. And I am grateful to all past financial supporters who have empowered and fueled the mission of Woke Watch Canada.
As much as I hate to do it, I am compelled to ask again that readers please consider joining the ranks of the paid supporters. And today I am announcing a new offering, a special treat for paid subscribers, in the form of a regular “fireside chat” series of posts penned by yours truly. In a way they will be somewhat like Tristan Hopper’s regular National Post column First Reading, where he gives brief summaries of top stories. However, my fireside chats will not be so disciplined, nor brief. Instead, they will be summaries and short expositions of interesting things I have noticed during the course of my research. These essays will help alleviate this really annoying thing that happens to me all the time: I come across something that blows my mind, I make a note of it, I file the note in a special chrome-plated box labeled “Things to Expand into Mind-Blowing Essays,” and then I never return to it again.
So instead of continually performing this pointless exercise, I will write fireside chat style informal essays highlighting the compelling things, the novel things, the beautiful things, possibly some of the infuriating things, and maybe a bit of the shocking or hilarious things — in all cases, where ever and whenever they present themselves to me as such. I wrote about the fireside chat form yesterday in a strange piece (in the fireside chat form no less) meant as an update to readers of my personal Substack, The Turn. That piece is called, Specialist Generalist At Your Service! : Fireside Chats, Formal Essays, Analysis, Theory and a World of Pithy Satire.
From the piece (which you will need to read if you want to know what the hell Specialism Generalism is):
“Not to hype it up too much, but the fireside chats will include detailed instructions on how to be a specialist generalist - this alone should make you rush to upgrade to the paid tier! What are you waiting for?”
There are other benefits as well. The fireside chat concept allows me to keep the articles, essays and opinion pieces freely accessible to all readers, while offering something different, something extra, to the paid subscribers. When I launched the Western Polemic, a new Substack late last year – a sister newsletter to Woke Watch Canada – I mentioned that there would be some articles that would appear behind the paywalls of both Woke Watch Canada and the Western Polemic. My fireside chat essays will be the only essays that appear behind the paywalls. (To be clear, I will post the fireside chats to both Woke Watch Canada and the Western Polemic so that paid subscribers of either newsletter will have access to them).
And lastly, in case readers are wondering why I now run three Substack newsletters, let me briefly explain:
My first newsletter, The Turn, features only my own writing. It is where I repost the best of my stuff published previously in other places. But I also occasionally write essays and articles which feature only there. I post one or two pieces per month to The Turn.
Woke Watch Canada is the main Substack. It features the writing of many different authors, as well as much of my own. I publish three or more articles per week on Woke Watch Canada. It is focused on Canadian issues which is the reason I needed to launch something that would cover issues outside of the Canadian Sphere.
The Western Polemic, which also features many writers along with myself, not only expands coverage to the entire Western world, it also focuses on formally crafted essays and academic writing. I have published three essays so far, and plan to post two or three per month in perpetuum.
Ok I’ll wrap it up here. Once again, Happy 603 Day and Happy New Year!
